The story of Scathe has more than a few geographical locations to help enrich and inspire the story. Though none helped provide the backbone of the story like Venice. It's my dream vacation spot, even though I'm leery about deep water. I will swallow my fears for the chance to walk along the canals.
Venice, Italy helped provide a enchanting focal point on the pivotal moments in my characters' union. Not to mention, it is often called one of the top romantic places in the world. For Andrea and Luc it's the place where something between them changed their course in life. Where the past connected and altered their future. Within the story, the city brought their romance alive-- in the past as well as in the future. The history there is too broad to dabble into a novella. However, I wanted the notable masquerade theme to be the top imagery linked to the story and bring out the authenticity of Venice. The Venetian mask signified so much in the story: an unveiling of hearts, souls, and allowing the other to see them bare without something to hide behind. It wasn't intentional but after realizing the climax and conclusion, the mask was so important. A talisman of some sort. In the original cover, it had Andrea's mask but when the story underwent a name change and became a series, it was scrapped. I loved it but decided to go with a more simple look to the covers that will just feature the Prince's of Hell (Sovereigns of Sheol) on the covers. Still I was lucky enough to find a sexy male wearing a devilish mask that could easily tie into my story and Venice.
It just so happens, in the last stages before Scathe's publication, Google Maps has a special tour of Venice where you can learn history, see the streets up close and personal, and get a firsthand look at Venice where Luc and Andrea's story begins.
